As another reviewer commented, "You would think these exercises would be boring. They're not." That absolutely nails it. Some of the exercises are a variation of Colin's Lip Flexibility exercises (a must have), but Lin has constructed his exercises in such a way that really works the embouchure in a manner I haven't seen in other studies, while always focusing on a continuous air stream throughout the exercise. Play them carefully and lyrically and you'll get results. A big "Thank You!" to Javier Gonzalez (an incredibly lead trumpet player in L.A.) for mentioning Lin's work in one of his YouTube videos. If you're a dedicated player or a teacher, you need to have these studies in your library. As to my background, I'm a former principal trumpet of the International Youth Orchestra who has now returned to playing after many years away.
Needed for trumpet instruction. A must have for your trumpet music library. Recommend that your students purchase a copy as well. Brass players, especially trumpet players, can never get enough of this type of playing. It is nice to have a variety of exercises to play to keep things interesting.
You'd think these exercises would be boring. They're not. I'm using them for warm-ups and to finish up my practices. For full disclosure, I am a returning horn player, coming back after 40 years.
