Occasionally I come across an unknownauthor or story that catches my attention. Perhaps someoneeven recommended it to me. Or I might see an interview orarticle about a burgeoning new writer and I run straight outto a library or bookstore to get a copy. But first the book/author has to be discovered by an agent.Paul Sander's has been a writer for many years but has beenunable to get published. He just hasn't been picked up. It hasnothing to do with his writing abilities.I read a completed manuscript by Paul nearly 20 years ago. Infact, I didn't read it, I sat up all night and devoured it cover to cover, handing it back to him the following morning. These days you can publish your own book online. That eliminatesat least one of the steps that hold back authors. Paul was able tohave his book listed for e-books to get his work out there.Brain Damage is as compelling as any criminal story out there. Itrevolves around the case of a murder that actually took place inPhoenix, Arizona. Paul lives there and was chosen as amember of the jury. To read his novel is to read what it is trulylike to sit on a jury. I learned like all of us that things are not as theyappear on television. Paul shares the behind the scenes type of dayto day schedules and appointments that a jury keeps. And whilehe sat on that jury, he reflects on his own life as well; the mistakesthat all families go through and he wonders how things couldhave been done differently.I did agree with many of the comments regarding proofreading. Thereare mistakes that came with the lack of proofreading and self-publication.With this self-publication Paul Sanders has finally got his work out to thepublic to find a reading audience.Hopefully he can find a publishing company or more importantly an agentthat can forward his promising writing career.
I love the direction of the book. I love that he gives facts, and doesn't downplay what he doesn't think to be important. However, I can not overlook the many disjointed passages, missing words or thoughts and grammatical errors. The other jurors are constantly being described, with slight changes to each description. A fact will be stated, and the three pages later you will see a statement from the author that contradicts the fact. Towards the beginning of the book the writer states that the killer hit the victim 5 times with the hammer, then throughout the book he continuesouly changes the number ("hit him twice, maybe more; hit him 4 to 5 times"). I found very little cohesion through-out the book, and the entire book left me feeling disjointed. I honestly believe that the author should have hired a better editor.
I love it isn't quite the rating I'd have given this book. But without a choice bearing on the negative aspects it's the best I could do. I liked the writing style, but not the story. A Juror's Tale gives a view of a trial from the juror's viewpoint. The story is horrific. If you ever wondered what it would be like to sit as a juror in a murder trial, reading this book will answer all your questions in great detail. Don't read this as fiction; it is pure fact, colored only by the thoughts and emotions of the self-proclaimed 13th juror.
Not sure how to classify this book genrewise. It is unlike any I have ever read, more like a diary than any thing else. Provides insight into both our judicial system as seen through the eyes of a juror in a first degree murder trial and into the psyche of said juror who was seeking healing and the ability to forgive those who abused him as a child. Lots of unanswered questions regarding the murder disturbed the juror. Disturbed me as well..
I have never served on a jury so this account was a revealing look into the process, confusion, expectations, and behind the scenes of jury selection and the serving on a criminal trial. This book held my attention and provided an insightful look into the workings of the court. The author was thorough in his explanations and allowed the reader see the healing he experienced in his own child abuse. The only negative thing I can say about this book is there was not good editing done as there were several glaring mistakes in the language, grammar, and/or typos. Overall an excellent read.
I enjoyed this tale of a juror's experience. My limited juror experience was in a trial that only lasted one day, most of which was spent in the jury room interspersed with a few minutes of testimony. The trial was supposed to be about child abuse but nothing we heard was enough for us to vote guilty. There was no evidence at all that we saw or heard. There was lots of speculation about what was discussed during the many times we were sent from the room but we could not make a decision on things we did not hear so the verdict was unanimous very quickly. I left with the impression that it was a waste of time so I was glad to see another side to our justice system. It made me rethink my poor impression of jury duty.
Unexpectedly well-done. The author’s own experience, combined with the trial he recounts, comes together in such a way that the reader feels, rather than reads about, the path taken in coming to a verdict. The book is a journey worth taking.Similar to other raters, the book would have received five stars if not for the unfortunate mistake of not having had the book proofed for spelling, punctuation, repeat descriptive passages (Butthead’s patient wife, among others) and tense changes. There were simply too many to be overlooked.
Paul Sanders is an excellent author, his books give the reader a unique perspective on these trials from a juror's point of view, explaining things and what happened that most people will never experience. Purchase any/all of his books and you won't be disappointed. Very good details, taking the reader step by step, day by day. He works hard and brings the reader right into the jury and what went on.
