I have done crosswords for many years and have even tolerated the recent Google-assisted mass production of puzzles, but this book is insufferable. All its puzzles are not “crossword puzzles†but “cross-sentence puzzles†as they contain lengthy and ridiculous wordplay or meaningless sentences and far-fetched clues, while the small number of straight clues does not enable one even to start figuring out such aberrations. When creators are in a hurry they create onomatopoetic entries that obviously do not appear in any dictionary and arbitrary abbreviations (the first three letters of any word are considered an abbreviation!). Also, a few of the puzzles’ creators even resort to providing answers in foreign languages. A new twist is the clue starts a sentence that only the Delphic Oracle could imagine how to complete it. Quite a lot of entries contain urban slang or words that exist only in the creator’s mind. The majority of the rest of the clues come from pop culture hinting at some character on a TV show, movie, play, novel, sports team, etc., and their relatives. On the other hand, some puzzles require deep scholarly knowledge. Thus neither a celeb wannabe nor an educated person can deal with such puzzles. Finally, in some puzzles icons, whole words or dots are substituted for letters in some squares!
To start, I have worked crosswords for 35 years or more, and I routinely complete a week of current NYT puzzles, in no more than 5 hours, while watching TV, in ink, without much fanfare and struggle, just some thought and consideration, but that's the point.That as the basis, this book of puzzles is I'm guessing 25% impossible. I stare and stare, and even "cheat" and Google factual things that are asinine for anyone to know ("Author Lieblich", yeah right), and I cannot get but half of the turd finished.Great value in a pile of puzzles. If you are bored with 2018 NYT puzzles being "easy" and are looking for some of the harder puzzles ever made then buy this.Editorial comments:----------------------------Puzzle #233 !PU SMOTTOB seems to have MASSIVE numbering problems based on the solution I find online from when it was printed in 1984.No puzzle has a date printed with it, and I guess I'd like that...to know that the esoteric answer I will never get ...Author Lieblich: Amia Lieblich (Hebrew: עמיה ליבליך‎; born 1939) is an Israeli psychologist and writer, who has gained prominence in the field of qualitative research (and narrative studies) in psychology.[1] Lieblich is professor emeritus from Hebrew University, where she has also served as dean of students. Since her retirement from Hebrew University she is a faculty member at the Academic College of Tel Aviv.Book is hideously unwieldy to use, so if you buy it plan to cut it apart and get a clipboard. I recommend actually using power tools to cut the binding off.
I guess I was going out of my league with this purchase because these puzzles are very difficult. My boyfriend and I love crossword puzzles, however I’d bet there’s not a single puzzle in this book we could solve. Too many obscure words and phrases... Font is small too, but that didn’t bother me as much as buying a giant book of puzzles that are too difficult to complete. This was purchased as a gift for my boyfriend who is a Mensa member... I guess we need to start with the Monday NYT book and try our luck there.
It was awkward to use, because it was thick and could not be laid flat.It ought to be issued with a spiral spine. I did a few puzzles, but gaveit away for the reasons mentioned. I do crossword books all the time,but am careful to buy ones that can be laid flat.
-- The puzzles are punny. It helps to know that.-- Around #50, the puzzles shrink to a size that is unreadable unless you use cheaters.-- Some of the clues are just unfathomable, which is a little frustrating at times. But it's fun to look up the meanings of these obscure words.-- I bought a clipboard and tear out about 12 sheets at a time to fill these out. Otherwise, it is a constant struggle to manhandle the book.-- I am up to #409 and have only pitched about 10 puzzles. The theme, the clues, the purpose of those puzzles were just foreign to me. I do crosswords to relax before bed, and those 10 were making me consider murder in my heart.-- They are definitely a different flavor from the Dell Expert-Challenger Crosswords. It's like reading Shakespeare; once you finally get the cadence, it all starts making sense.I am an investigator at heart. I love the difficult puzzles as I, before google, would get out dictionaries, and even encyclopedias, to discover the answers. The investigating was relaxing for me. Now I just use google. On the "quote" puzzles, which are my least favorite, I just cheat! I get a couple of words, look it up, fill it in, then have fun with the rest of the puzzle. No apologies!If you like challenging puzzles, you will like 90% of these puzzles. 10% will be a little too difficult or just so irritating you throw them away. If you are wanting to do puzzles with just the knowledge in your head, I'd pass this book by. These authors love obscure!
I think I overstepped myself here. I love challenging puzzles and wanted to keep my brain active as I age, but these puzzles are the hardest the New York Times offers. I have done one puzzles so far complete and that was with a lot of cheating on the answers.I am on the second puzzle now and I have filled in 2O answers so far and am stuck. This time I am going to look up answers on the internet for help.I do recommend these puzzles for people who are experts at solving Crossword puzzles. I am going to purchase the weekday set next time and build up to this book.Besides being too dumb for this book my other complaint is that for a Super Size book the puzzles and clues are quite small for this senior's eyes and I am having a difficult time reading the clues and fitting the answers in the small areas.I do love puzzles and Will Shortz is the greatest puzzle maker of all time so I will continue to plug along on these puzzles.This book is for people who love a real challenge!
